Feeling stressed, anxious? Acupuncture could be the solution…
Acupuncture is one of the oldest treatments in Chinese medicine; it is now recognised as a drug-free, holistic treatment by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the many benefits it provides.
Acupuncture as a stand-alone treatment or combined with other treatments can provide you with a long-term solution.
Acupuncture is known as an effective solution for insomnia, stress & anxiety by promoting the movement of Qi (pronounced Chee) which is a vital energy to our body's system.
This energy needs to flow freely & smoothly throughout the body & when this becomes blocked or scattered due to stress or anxiety it can lead to various different conditions, for example;
-
Sore tense muscles - often in the neck & shoulders
-
Headaches
-
Frequent colds
-
Anxiety & stress
-
Constant worry
-
Teeth grinding
-
Jaw clenching
-
Insomnia & feelings of being disorganised
When acupuncture is applied along energy channels where there are areas of stagnation it improves the flow of the body's Qi, helping to resolve symptoms, bringing a sense of relaxation & relief. This is due to the release of gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) which is a relaxation amino acid.
Along with GABA Acupuncture may also encourage the release of serotonin, dopamine epinephrine.
So it can be said that Acupuncture works to help ease stress & anxiety by the release of endorphins, which are naturally found in the brain. These natural brain chemicals released by Acupuncture help us to relax & feel happy.
Acupuncture also helps to reduce inflammation & pain in our bodies which can lead to an increase in stress levels!
If you feel you may be suffering with stress or anxiety & are looking for a holistic approach, we would be happy to discuss Acupuncture with you!

Acupunture for the relief of Tinnitus
Tinnitus is believed to be linked to the Somatosensory nervous system which gathers signals from the sensory organs of the face and head and communicates these signals to the brain. If circulatory problems, head or neck trauma, dental work, nerve damage or anything else occurs causing damage to the auditory nerves or the Cochlea of the inner ear, this can lead to the communication of these signals misfiring.
Hyperactive firing of these auditory nerves may lead to the “phantom sounds” that we know as tinnitus.
Tinnitus is a common complaint with 10% of adults in the U.K. suffering from this and 1% reported to suffer from severe tinnitus affecting the sufferers ability to lead a normal life.
Some of the most common causes of tinnitus are:
-
Head and neck injury
-
Prolonged exposure to loud noises
-
Menier’s disease (a syndrome marked by tinnitus, vertigo, deafness and a feeling of the ears being clogged)
-
Circulatory problems for example: high blood pressure or cardiovascular disease
-
Ear infection
-
Head congestion, cold, Flu or sinus infection
-
Foreign object obstructing ear canal
-
Stress
-
Overproduction of ear wax
TCM theory regards tinnitus as a problem caused by the bodies natural energies being out of balance. there may be excessive energy or heat rising in a particular organ system, and/or deficiency of energy or flow of blood in another organ system.
In TCM it is considered that tinnitus is related to one of the following:
-
Excessive, rising liver heat
-
Excessive liver and gallbladder heat
-
Phlegm-fire stagnation
-
Kidney essence deficiency
-
Blood-Qi deficiency
There may be a combination of these excesses and/or deficiencies.
Excessive conditions may present with ringing in the ears plus headache, irritability, dizziness. The ringing in the ears is loud and appears suddenly.
Deficient conditions will have a slow onset with a lower sound, often described as a whooshing or humming which comes and goes at random and may include poor memory and a lack of focus.
If you suffer from tinnitus or know of someone suffering from tinnitus and have seen your doctor to rule out any underlying conditions ie: Cardiovascular, Thyroid, or potential problems impacting your hearing and have found that conventional treatments have not brought relief, then please call so we can discuss an alternative approach to dealing with your tinnitus in the form of Acupuncture.

It is believed that 8 out of 10 people will suffer from back pain at some point in their life. Acupuncture is becoming an increasingly popular treatment as an alternative therapy for patients with chronic back pain that is not helped solely by conventional treatment.
Acupuncture has been used in China for more than 2,500 years.
Involving the insertion of thin needles at certain points of the body; these points are connected by meridians creating a flow of energy known as qi (pronounced “chee”).
Traditional acupuncturists believe that when the flow of qi is no longer free this results in pain, illness or both.
At the same time as re-balancing the body’s energies, stimulation of the nervous system takes place accompanied by a release of endorphins – your body’s natural pain killer!

Sodium Deoxycholate solution when injected breaks down adipocyte of fat cells, this solution causes an inflammatory result from the body which is vital & allows the destroyed fat cells to be removed from the body via the kidneys.
Are fat dissolving injections safe?
The journal of drugs in Dermatology published an article in 2017 which found that there had been 990,000 vials of Adipocytolytic solution used by the end of 2016 in the UK with no reported serious reactions.
Potential side effects
Side effects of fat dissolving injections are minimal & self resolving, minor swelling is a process key to the sucess of this treatment due to the bodies inflammatory response & therefore to be expected. Cupping Therapy
This is a form of alternative medicine dating back to the ancients Egyptians & Chinese Middle Eastern cultures, cups are placed on the skin for a few minutes to create suction.
This therapy is used for many purposes including helping with pain, blood flow, inflammation, relaxation & wellbeing. It can also be described as a form of deep tissue massage.
During both wet & dry cupping a flammable substance such as alcohol, paper or herbs are placed in a cup & set on fire, as this fire distinguishes the cup is placed upside down on the skin, as air goes inside the cup a vacuum is created, the skin rises & becomes red as blood vessels expand.
Wet cupping involves both suction & medical bleeding, this therapy follows a similar process to dry cupping, however prior to the cup being placed on the skin, a small incision or puncture is made on the skin & blood is drawn out during the process.
Cupping can be used to help with the following;

-
Encourages detoxification

-
Mild discomfort
-
Burns
-
Bruises
-
Skin infection

Acupuncture – an alternative treatment for Sciatica
Acupuncture as an alternative treatment for sciatica can help reduce pain without the side effects of NSAID’s & muscle relaxants patients with acute sciatica often find pain relief within 2 – 3 Acupuncture treatment sessions, more chronic conditions may require multiple treatments depending on underlying causes.
The sciatic nerve most commonly travels underneath the piriformis- traveling from your spinal cord through to your buttocks and the back of each leg to your feet. Pain can vary from a mild ache to a sharp burning pain, jolt, or electric shot feeling. Pain may be aggravated by coughing or sneezing or long periods of sitting, pain is normally located on one side of the body. There may also be numbness, muscle weakness in the leg or foot, or tingling sensations with a combination of pain or numbness in the leg.

Fertility Acupuncture
Are you trying to fall pregnant?
Is it taking longer than you thought?
This could be caused by stress, so often when the decision to expand our family unit is made expectations are that pregnancy will occur immediately that's more often not the case and as each month comes and goes the disappointment increases along with anxiety and stress, there may of course be other medical conditions to consider, for example: PCOS effects 1 in 10 women in the UK, Fibroids, Polyps and Thyroid disorders.
Fertility Acupuncture can help by addressing the above and many other problems, used for centuries to treat a variety of fertility issues.
If acupuncture cannot directly treat a specific problem, individuals can still benefit from Acupuncture having the ability to improve ovarian and follicular function and increase blood flow to the endometrium.
Myofascial Pain (MPS)
Myofascial Pain is a chronic condition which causes musculoskeletal pain it can occur after injury, repetitive motion or over-use of specific muscles but may also be caused by exhaustion, lack of sleep, stress, exposure to cold, poor posture, excessive caffeine, this usually starts in one area of the muscle leading to sensitive areas of tight muscle fibres referred to as “Trigger Points” over time this pain can extend throughout the muscle.
This can cause a deep throbbing aching pain, tightness, stiffness, vice like feeling and pain can be extreme!
If you have more than 50% of the following with no further explanation of the pain you may have trigger points;
-
Sore areas of muscle
-
Pain which usually occurs in specific areas of the body
-
Tightness and stiffness accompany in pain
-
Stretching the muscles only gives little or short-term relief
-
Anti-inflammatory medication doesn’t appear to help
-
Pain which can be described as aching, dull & a deep vice like ache which can build up over time
Acupuncture is a highly effective treatment for reducing pain and inflammation by targeting palpable trigger points associated with MPS.
If you feel any of the above applies to you, call Moraigh to discuss a treatment plan!
Acupuncture & Winter Blues
With the sun now beginning to set earlier and fall arriving leaves are beginning the process of turning from lovely shades of green to vivid hues of red, orange, and yellow and soon the trees will be bare!
Lack of sunlight is known to deplete our vitamin D stores which in turn effects the way we feel and lowers that lovely energetic, healthy feeling we experience with the sunshine and blue skies.
Acupuncture can help keep both the body and mind in-balance for example if you are a person that suffers with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) symptoms of which can be lower mood and fatigue, Acupuncture can help those feel good endorphins!
Lack of feel-good chemicals for example Beta endorphins are known to be linked to various forms of anxiety and depression.
Acupuncture combined with a good diet, exercise and rest can help you alleviate your symptoms!
The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the NHS recommend Acupuncture to help with a wide variety of conditions.
Age Spots - Do we really have to live with them?
The answer... No!
Brown spots on the skin (also known as lentigines, liver spots) As we age we often develop brown spots on our skin, particularly on our hands and face that's because they appear in areas where there has been a lot of sun exposure, if you acceptable to age spots they will usually start to appear form around the age of 30 years onwards.
Age spots respond well to Cryotherapy treatment and can be improved only after 1 - 2 treatments. Following an initial consultation which can take place on the same day as treatment a Cryo pen which is extremely effective is used to remove the sun spots.
The area is evenly spread at a temperature of -89c for up to 5 seconds where the process freezes the top layer of the age spot. A fine scab will form over 7 - 10 days, which is often much darker in colour, in-time this will fall off and new skin will appear.

BKS. Lyengar
A wonderful quote I think encompasses the aim of acupuncture.
I find in my practice clients may originally present with a specific issue, but when this is improved they carry on treatment because they are so happy with the way it improves their overall health & well-being.
Don’t just think of acupuncture as a means to treat a specific issue but as a reflection of your overall health & well-being.
